A Message From Bishop Burbidge on the Bishop’s Lenten Appeal

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

The annual Bishop’s Lenten Appeal (BLA) supports the work of our Diocese through programs and ministries that provide spiritual, charitable and educational assistance to men, women and children in our parishes.  The theme for the 2019 Bishop’s Lenten Appeal is “Together in the Light of Christ.”  Christ our Light has conquered the darkness and we are called to share His light with all whom we encounter.

As we participate in the BLA, each of us can become a light of hope to the hopeless, a gleam of faith to the faithless, and a special instrument of God’s love and mercy for which so many hunger.  Please consider pledging your support to the 2019 Bishop’s Lenten Appeal and help keep Christ’s light shining brightly within our Diocese.

Please be assured of my gratitude and continued prayers. May Almighty God bless and protect you always.

Dear Folks,
I leave for the Holy Land, and things go up in smoke back home.  I am referring to the apocalyptic laws which passed in NY and nearly passed in VA.  A non-practicing Catholic governor of NY rejoices at the slaughter of the most innocent.  And our own governor says unconscionable words about infanticide?  Evil seems to think it can come out of the shadows.
But let me say the most important words I can about Abortion:  Abortion is a forgivable sin.  The men and women of good will who carry this burden hear the whispers of the enemy of our souls telling them otherwise.  Do not believe the lies.  You can be forgiven, you can find mercy, Jesus will welcome you home.
But as for those who promote, legalize, and profit from the exploitation of vulnerable and overwhelmed women….. to them I give the words of our Lord, “Temptations to sin are sure to come, but woe to the one through whom they come! It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were cast into the sea than that he should cause one of these little ones to sin. Pay attention to yourselves!” (Luke 17:1-3a)
May the Lord deliver us from evil.
I have been carrying your prayer intentions with me in all of the shrines in the Holy Land and praying for each one specifically!  Here are a few pictures from where Jesus walked.

Concerts at St Mary Presents Emily Mason on February 22!

On Friday, February 22, 2019 at 8:00 p.m., Concerts at Saint Mary will present harpist and composer Emily Mason as she performs an evening of music for harp.  Ms. Mason will also be joined by internationally-acclaimed Philippine-born American tenor Allan Palacios Chan and organist David Uschold.

Originally from southern Virginia, Emily Mason now, for over eight years, calls District of Columbia area her home where she has an active career as a harpist, classical/jazz pianist, mezzo-soprano and organist.  She has been heard in venues such as the World Health Organization, the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center, Saint Thomas More Cathedral in Arlington, Virginia, and events for the Library of Congress. In addition, she occasionally joins the Manassas Symphony Orchestra.  Known for her original transcriptions of orchestral, piano and ensemble music for harp, she enjoys playing music which is unusual to hear on the harp – jazz, pop, and even classic rock.  Ms. Mason is currently Director of Music at St. Veronica Church in Chantilly, Virginia.

The concert program which will be presented by Ms. Mason will include performances of a variety of repertoire from classical to secular and will feature two original transcriptions:  Movement No. 2(“The Lyre of Orpheus”) from the fourth piano concerto by Ludwig van Beethoven arranged for harp and organ; and Love Bade Me Welcomefrom Five Mystical Songsby Ralph Vaughan William arranged for tenor, harp and organ.  Admission to the concert is free and a free-will offering will be taken to support future Concerts at Saint Mary productions. Following the concert there will be a reception in the church’s Parish Life Center where there will be an opportunity to meet the artists and share fellowship with others.
